Senior Brand Manager
Makes a Comeback

The Adaptable &
Agile Marketer

We saw a focus towards 'Project Management' style roles, signifying a shift towards skill-based marketing roles with emphasis on innovation, stakeholder management and cross-collaboration.

Digital is the way of the future and we saw an increase in demand for digital marketing and eCommerce skills across all role levels, as well as an increase in specialist positions being introduced to Marketing Functions.

Senior Brand Managers saw a major comeback after being squeezed out of the market pre-covid. We anticipate demand for SBMs, as well as BMs, will be strong in 2024, particularly those with New Product Development experience.

Adaptability and agility is at an all-time high, given the fluctuating economic landscape, changing consumer behaviours, and technological advancements, requiring marketers to learn quickly, be more flexible, and embrace innovation.

National Business Manager makes a comeback

Demand for eCommerce expertise

Focus on Revenue Growth Management

There has been a resurgence in demand for the National Business Manager (NBM) role, but this time at a more senior level with added responsibilities including P&L ownership, people management and leadership capabilities.

The Customer Director role has evolved significantly with a breadth of experience across different functions (especially Category) crucial to leading and delivering at this level. Will the return of the NBM stimulate demand for this role?

Sales professionals are increasingly being expected to have expertise in eCommerce, whether in dedicated roles or from National Account Managers who are expected to understand the omnichannel path to purchase.

Businesses are increasingly turning to Revenue Growth Management (RGM) as the most efficient means to realise value. Modern NAMs and NBMs will need to understand its principles and partner effectively with it to identify and execute against RGM opportunities.

Category Leaders
of the Future

Demand for
Revenue Growth Management

The Master
Negotiatior

FMCG organisations are increasingly looking towards category to provide a strategic and sustainable advantage in a more difficult economic environment. This demand is also helping to bridge the gap between category management and functional leadership.

Increasingly, Revenue Growth Management roles are becoming more external facing and playing a prominent role within FMCG businesses, particularly in the current inflationary environment. The demand for these highly analytical roles is only expected to increase in the next year - watch this space!

As Category moves closer to the forefront of business planning and decision making, the modern customer manager will need to be a master negotiator, with a high level of commercial acumen and strong stakeholder management skills, in order to be able to execute the commercial plan and create alignment between business and retailer.

WORKFORCE IMBALANCE

On the back of a full financial year of “normal” operations in the post COVID era, many companies have undertaken a detailed diagnosis of their business performance and underlying drivers. This has resulted in many businesses down-sizing or re-structuring their operating model, particularly in Technology, Property & Communication sectors.

One of the outcomes of this, has been a surplus of talent at Executive and Senior Levels, allowing companies to be very specific with regards to hiring criteria. Similarly, as businesses move on from the unusual market conditions created during the COVID-19, there has been an increased focus on accountability for business performance, particularly at the CFO level.

At the Mid-level end of the market, there has been a noticeable shortfall of talent, enabling top talent to negotiate better outcomes.

SKILL IS KING

The shift in demand has moved towards technical skills over more traditional capabilities around people management and experience. There has been a growing demand for accountants with strong data analytics skills, particularly as business systems improve. Businesses are relying more on data-driven decision-making, and accountants need to analyse large datasets to provide valuable insights to their organisations.

While soft skills around partnering, communication and influencing capabilities continue to be valued, it is worth noting that high performing individuals who bring both technical expertise and partnering skills to execute effectively and rapidly, will stand out.

FLEXIBLE WORKING

Another substantial consequence of the COVID era is the great debate around flexible working.  The corporate market proved that work can continue effectively while teams work from home, but the market position is changing rapidly.

Technology companies that have previously been the holy grail for flexible working have changed their tunes and are mandating office days. This has been driven by challenges in maintaining business performance and culture in a remote work.

While many companies are now insisting on five days a week in the office, most have adopted a 3/2 or 2/3 model. Employees prefer options weighted towards working from home and tend to pay notable attention to this aspect when making career decisions.

GLOBAL MOBILITY

While there has been minimal international movement in the past three years, 2023 saw a renewed interest for those previously held back from moving in and out of the country.

We saw several company-driven overseas transfers this year, and roles in key Executive and Senior positions filled by global talent with a proven track record. Furthermore, we are seeing an increase in qualified and experienced talent from the UK and Ireland on skilled migrant and working holiday visas seeking employment in Australia.

It is also worth noting that ongoing regulatory changes in accounting standards, both globally and locally, has resulted in an increased demand for accounting professionals to stay updated on the changes to ensure compliance.

Uncertainty in the economy is also increasing the appetite for contractors, as it allows companies more flexibility as conditions change.

WHERE'S THE DEMAND?

We are seeing increased demand for the following roles:

FINANCIAL
ANALYSIS

TAX &
TREASURY

FINANCIAL
CONTROLLERS

Finance professional with the ability to build relationships and partner with the leadership team and non-finance stakeholders have never been in such high demand. The soft skills a finance professional brings to the table is becoming just as important as the technical.

An increase in ATO investigations over the last few years, coupled with the need for data to make quick decisions,  has resulted in a shift towards traditionally consultancy-based services being brought in house and embedded within the modern finance function.

The past 12 months has seen an increase in conservatism across multiple businesses in terms of headcount, resulting in increased demand for professionals with a strong background in compliance reporting.
